Astronaut loses tool bag during spacewalk.

First, a grease gun inside her tool bag leaked, coating everything inside with a film of lubricant.
While she was trying to clean it up in the absence of gravity, the whole bag floated away.
Stefanyshyn-Piper and Steve Bowen were outside the space station on the scheduled six-hour spacewalk, the first of the space shuttle Endeavour's stay at the station.
After completing a few preliminary tasks, Stefanyshyn-Piper was beginning the job of cleaning and lubricating the gears of the station's malfunctioning starboard Solar Alpha Rotary Joint, or SARJ, when she discovered the grease gun leak and then lost the bag.

The starboard SARJ is designed to allow the solar panels on the left side of the station to rotate and track the sun.
It started malfunctioning soon after it was installed, and astronauts soon determined the gear assembly is full of metal shavings, a sure sign that metal is grinding on metal.
Cleaning and lubricating the starboard SARJ is a time-consuming job, and will take several spacewalks to complete.
When finished, the joint should be partially functional again. More extensive repairs are planned for the future.
Stefanyshyn-Piper was able to share tools with Bowen, and NASA mission controllers expressed confidence that the lost tool bag would not be too much of a problem for the duration of the spacewalk.
Mission controllers were also tracking the lost bag, which they say is floating well clear of the station and drifting further away.
As the action unfolded outside, the astronauts inside the shuttle-station complex started unloading gear from a huge trunk that was brought up by Endeavour, The Associated Press reported.

The big-ticket item -- and one of the first things to be hooked up -- is a recycling system that will convert astronauts' urine and sweat into drinking water, AP reported.
It is essential if NASA is to double the size of the space station crew to six next June.
Endeavour also delivered an extra bathroom, kitchenette, two bedrooms, an exercise machine and refrigerator that will allow space station residents to enjoy cold drinks for the first time, AP reported.
The additions -- coming exactly 10 years after the first space station piece was launched -- will transform the place into a two-bath, two-kitchen, five-bedroom home, AP reported.

If you've ever been riding down the street and had your pants cuff ripped asunder, there may be a revolution at hand.
Trek Bicycle is part of a movement to bury the finger-pinching, pants-munching, rust-prone sprocket and chain, and usher in an era of belt-driven bikes that might have the inventors of the self-propelled transportation Schwinning in their graves.
Wisconsin-based Trek is introducing two models this holiday season that are chainless, instead using technology most often found in things like motorcycles and snowmobiles. While some smaller custom bike makers have used them before, Trek is the first to use the technology for mass-produced bicycles.
The largest U.S. domestic bike manufacturer is hoping to capitalize on a new group of urban pedal-pushers who are trading their cars for a more low-tech way to get around because of gas prices as well as health and environmental concerns.
The U.S. bicycle industry was a $5.4 billion industry in 2007, including the retail value of bicycles, related parts, and accessories through all channels of distribution, according to research funded by the National Sporting Goods Association. More than 43 million Americans age 7 and older were estimated to have ridden a bike six times or more in 2005, the industry group said.
"People are really finding bicycles to be a very simple solution to some very complex problems that they face every day," said Eric Bjorling, Trek's lifestyle brand manager. "Anything we can do in our design to really help them and help them live that lifestyle is probably better for both the consumers and us."
Bjorling said the new belts are a low-maintenance solution to a chain, which has roughly 3,000 parts including all the links and connectors.
Aside from the whisper-quiet ride, the lighter and longer-lasting carbon-fiber composite belts won't rust, can't be cut, won't stretch or slip and won't leave grease marks around your ankles. A guard over the belt-drive and the construction of the system makes getting your pants stuck an unlikely scenario, Bjorling said.
One version of the chainless bike, called the District ($930), is a single-speed, complete with a silver body, orange accents and brown leather seat and handles. The other, called the Soho ($990), is an eight-speed bike that uses an internal hub to adjust the speed rather than gears.
Bicycles have come a long way from the "boneshakers back in the 19th century," said Orin Starn, a professor at Duke University who teaches a course on the anthropology of sports. Some companies have used direct drive or drive shaft bikes that provide some of the same benefits as Trek's chainless bikes, but those models have yet to replace the age-old chain.
"Certainly for the last 40 or 50 years we have this iconic image of the traditional bicycle that includes the chain," Starn said. "We've seen this evolution in different styles and stuff, but the chain has been a cultural constant."
Bjorling admits chain-driven bikes are still efficient, but said an urban rider won't have to worry about greasing or cleaning the chain. The belt can be cleaned with a normal cleaning agent and rag, and the bike sprocket is designed to push through any snow, dirt or grime. And one belt will typically last three years -- the life span of three chains.
How riders will take to the new bikes remains to be seen, since they are not out for sale yet. The District model will go on sale in December, followed the next month by the Soho. There may be those in the biking community that may take issue with swapping bike chains with newer technology.
"Bike purists are going to take a look at it and say 'oh, you know it's another option to a chain,"' Bjorling said. "Are we going to see a ton of people switching from a chain to a belt drive? I think in some urban environments yes, but it's definitely not the coffin that's gonna bury the chain."
Over the years there have been many changes in the bike industry, specifically materials that have made products lighter and stronger, said David Oakley, a manager at Agee's Bicycles, which has been in business in Richmond since 1910.
While some may question the chainless bikes, Oakley pointed to the initial skepticism, and eventual success, of mountain bikes.
"We all know that putting gears on a beach cruiser to be able to ride back up the hill turned out to be a pretty good thing," Oakley joked of the bike industry's most popular segment.
Oakley said there's a general excitement behind the new technology, but cautioned that the notion may not ring everyone's bell.
"From a maintenance standpoint, it's huge," he said. "If this really, completely takes off, the lubricant industry is probably not going to be excited."

The “Gimme More” singer was spotted on her way to film a cameo for the Pussycat Dolls’ new video for their single “When I Grow Up,” although it was believed to be more of an acting role rather than a performance. An insider commented, “It’s a small part.”
And speaking of cameos, Miss Spears may be considering a crossover to television, having been spotted exiting the Merv Griffin Productions offices last week.
As for her How I Met Your Mother gig, it sounds like the opportunity is there for a hat trick. One of the show’s stars, Neil Patrick Harris, told press, “The door is open for her,” when asked about a third appearance.

Rihanna Takes Flight

Yesterday was a good one for the paparazzi at LAX. With Hayden Christensen and Rachel Bilson flying out of the Int’l airport, pop superstar Rihanna showed up as well.
The “Umbrella” hottie arrived looking stylish, as usual in a grey striped top underneath a beige cropped jacket with a pair of designer jeans and an oversized red purse.

Earlier in the day, the Good Girl Gone Bad was spotted spending some cheese on a shopping excursion in Hollywood, California with Chris Brown looking so happy together.

According to reports, Beyonce is also reportedly readying to record the theme song for the new James Bond film, Quantum of Solace.

Amy Winehouse was originally slated for the track, but producer Mark Ronson said work on the song has been shelved for the moment because Amy is not ready to produce music.
The rumors claim that Knowles will be speaking with Bond producers about performing the new track - which is to be written by Amanda Ghost in collaboration with legendary Bond composer John Barry.

Continuing along on Kanye West’s Glow in the Dark tour, Rihanna entertained a packed house at the Nissan Pavilion in Bristow, Virginia last night (May 10).
And while she’s been tied up with touring as of late, you can expect a break in the Umbrella singer’s hectic schedule sometime in the near future.
“I already told everyone in my camp, ‘This year, I’m not going to work like a horse,’” Rihanna told press. The 20-year-old Barbados beauty adds: “In 2007 I didn’t really get to enjoy anything that I achieved, because I was moving, moving, moving.”

According to insider reports, Spears was there to check out his new spring collection and to get a few gifts for her little sis. But she also had business plans in mind, as she wants to work on a new line with the high profile designer.
In related news, an executive producer for “How I Met Your Mother” recently confirmed that he’s open to having Britney Spears return for another cameo.
“We always said, ‘You know, if her character pops, we’ll bring her back,’” Carter Bays told The Associated Press on Thursday. “I thought she was great. I was very proud of that episode.”

Brangelina’s Temporary Texas Spread

Away from their place in New Orleans, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are currently calling Smithville, Texas home.
And while the Mr and Mrs Smith co-star couple are in the Lone Star state as Brad films Tree of Life, their temporary property isn’t too shabby.

She recently told E! that she wants to “go save” Britney Spears, and now Madonna is taking things a step further in the latest issue of Vanity Fair magazine.

The El Cantante co-stars showed up at NYC’s Ziegfeld Theater to catch the premiere of the new film “Shine A Light”, posing for photographers before making their way into the screening room.
“Shine A Light” is a new career-spanning documentary on the Rolling Stones, including concert footage from their “A Bigger Bang” tour.
The film, which is directed by Martic Scorsese and stars big names such as Christina Aguilera and Bill Clinton, opens in theaters this Friday, April 4.

Paris Hilton Tries Out Belly Dancing

There’s an old saying that goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” And apparently that adage also applies to Istanbul, at least when Paris Hilton is involved.
The “Simple Life” babe was in the Turkish city yesterday as a judge in the Miss Turkey 2008 pageant when she became a little more involved with the proceedings than she had planned.

A performing belly dancer escorted her onto the stage during a routine and led Paris through a few traditional moves before letting her return to her seat. And Miss Hilton looked relieved to sit back down.
Prior to the competition, she told press, “This is my first time judging anything like this. I’m going to look at how the girls carry themselves, what they look like, the way they dress and what they say.”

Spencer Pratt Offers His Two Cents

Appropriately being released a day after the third season premiere of The Hills, Spencer Pratt debuted his new advice column for Radar magazine on Tuesday.
One reader asked of Spencer, “I just started dating this guy who I really like. The other night, we went out and got hammered. I ended up passing out in his bed. When I woke up, I discovered that I had wet the bed. I was so embarrassed that I left while he was still asleep. If I call him, do I have to apologize or can I pretend it never happened? Or do I have to wait for him to call me?”

In response, Pratt replied: “Wow! This is a situation you do not want to find yourself in. I personally would never want to be with a girl who gets so wasted that she’s pissing in bed. It’s time to sign up for AA, my dear, because drunks are not sexy.”
“Regardless, if the guy’s really, really, really cool, he might understand. But I wouldn’t count on it. Best bet is to be honest and tell him that was the drunkest you’ve ever been and that it was a huge mistake and it’ll never happen again. And make sure you buy him new sheets,” he added.
Meanwhile, Spencer’s girlfriend Heidi Montag has been busy with the launch of her second single, “No More,” in which she sings: “I wish that I never loved you. I should have never let you have my heart/You made me not want to feel again/Made me scared to open up/Now I’m better off/No more bad days/Don’t need you to validate me.”
